short 16mm film I shot my 2nd year at Cal Arts.

James and I shot this on 16mm tungsten film with a Bolex cam. When we learned we'd put the film in backwards, we expected to get nothing back but actually got some pretty cool flipped footage. The film is way darker than it should be and orange instead of blue. But I didn't want to let the footage go to waste. The story is still there. Enjoy!

First rough pass at this. Haven't been updating that much lately because I am down a scanner and taking pictures of drawings is a total bitch (lighting issues and all). This is going to be a pan scene for something I'm doing in Flash inspired by the song "When I'm Small" by Phantogram.

I brief update:
It finally looks like I'll be getting out of my house soon and moving down to beloved LA. I'm on hold at Superfad LA, Buck hit me up for another cell job at the end of this month, and another SUPER SECRET OPERATION THAT I AM NOT ALLOWED TO DISCUSS is about to roll out in the next month or 2 with potential work opportunities there. So that's cool.
In other news, I'm making it a goal to finish at least one illustrative piece a day, whether it's digital or hand drawn. Mike Mitchell (RIP) once told Fur that drawing is a skill you need to constantly sharpen. Ideally you should be drawing almost 6 hours a day, which I can't say I'm doing anything near right now. But I'm going to start definitely making small goals for myself everyday. Work is going to start appearing more frequently on this thing. AND I AM EXCITED. AND YOU SHOULD BE TOO.

I'm making this quick because I really should be asleep right now.

What a last few months!

I worked my butt off working in Pasadena with Dave, building up portfolio work, finishing paintings, and putting together my first makeshift reel. All this paid off...

I'm now employed at Brand New School, a design studio in Santa Monica.

It starts as a paid intern position for 2 months and who knows how many doors this will open for me.
I'm actually designing for the first time in my life, something I've always wanted to do. ... (design, not sell my soul to the devil in advertising).
This is my 2nd week there, and so far it's felt like CS4 Boot Camp. By the time I come out of there, I know I'm going to have a friggin arsenal of skills under my belt. Plus, I figured if I can handle the ridiculous speed the advertising industry in southern CA moves, I can handle anything.

My life starts now.
Bring it.

So I'm in Seattle for the next 2 weeks working at Superfad studios.
Superfad? More like SUPER RADDD.

anyways,
I'm working with Creek and Dylan on a commercial for Sharpie which should be wrapped up by the 29th, but may push a few days more.
In the mean time, I'm enjoying my super plush room at the Silver Cloud Hotel.

King size bed to myself? Sounds like a whole lot of WIN to me.

Gonna explore the city this weekend, if we don't get called in to work that is. The weather's supposed to be nice.
When this gig's wrapped up, I'll be headin back down to Portland for a week or two to tie up loose ends..aiming to be back home in LA by mid/late June but WE'LL SEE.
Time to tuck myself in for a night of Deadwood then off to sleep.

As if it's not obvious by now, music videos are a huge inspiration to me. They have been since I was very young.

I recently learned that several videos that I've really enjoyed in the last few years were all done by the same director.
Patrick Daughters.
The stills I'm posting here don't do justice to the actual videos, which are so full of movement, emotion, rhythm, and energy ...not to mention exquisite lighting.
No other music video director's work has evoked so much emotion as Daughter's videos has.

i have been absorbing as much sun as i can while it's still here.
They say it should last maybe another month at the latest, then it's time to hunker down and face 7 months of cold and rain.
I can do it.

Days are spent walking long distances, bag full of sketch pads, markers and cameras.
Late afternoons after a day of work/exploring, my head resting on the window of the Max as it takes me over the river back home.
"This is a blue line train to Hillsboro."
Nights, Meg and I will adventure to somewhere new. I draw small maps in my notebooks to remember how to get here and there.
Nights
,popping open white wine and laying out the projects for the night while 6 Feet Under plays in the background.
nights spent in the kitchen, having endless talks with Meg at 1 AM after a tummy full of the best home cooked vegan food i've ever had.
rides
,on the trains and buses, conversations flow openly as every friendly stranger puts all their fences aside and shares. relates. connects.
i could never do that at home. i dont know why.

my mommy calls to say hello.
"um, a friend of yours texted me today. He said I had to fly you home to visit next month. Do you know someone named Josh?"
my friends are an interesting pack of cards.
Story sharing sessions with em em.
And to hear cal artian voices makes my heart swell.

Early morning jogs.
Walks through the colourful neighborhoods, filled with the most beautiful plants and flowers I've ever seen.
Cats that step off their porches to meow hello to you, flipping on their backs and purring loudly.
The grass is so green.
The sky is so clear.
There is so much life here.

it's only just begun.

i finally got to show my reel to ted tonight.
it was a home run...im really glad i got it all squared away and presentable. we went over it over n over and gabbed ideas till 12:30. ted's a really great guy.

Today i worked in the cubes from 10 AM ..to midnight...i left once to go get an external hard drive. a very romantic Valentine's Day indeed. ..but i was happy. i got a lot of work done and am very pleased with the results so far. Dave Creek helped me chop up my boards today and take out all the shit i didnt need. and although i stood back in udder horror while he took down this panel and that panel, in the end we both stood back and looked at it.
"see?.. it's still the SAME story"
